So, it's September. The really-long unexpected LJ hiatus was part forced and then part just that I couldn't find the time, but I'm back now! (Hooray! Right? Right?) Now to get on with the really long update.

First, the TV rambling, of course, to make it easier for those who aren't interested to skip it. I've caught up on the following: WH13, Psych, RP, Philanthropist, Mental, Leverage, DB, and QL.

Re: QL: Yes, I mean that I finished the entire five seasons of Quantum Leap. It was a little weird to end on "Dr. Ruth" like I did, but hey. God, how much I love that show. Now that I've seen all of them, gotta say, "Shock Theater" will still always be my absolute all-time favorite. Seriously, people, if you think this show is dumb/bad/not worth watching, you haven't seen the s3 finale. Sure, the series is very... 90's, sometimes, but it is damn good TV. Not to mention the fic. Oh god, most of the fic is so good. *sigh* QL fandom, ilu, even though you hardly exist anymore outside of Yuletide, which is sad. ):

Re: Mental, two comments. 1) "Life and Limb" was damn good. Really, really well-done portrayal, as far as I'm able to comment having not experienced that. I loved it. 2) It just occurred to me this morning (and I finished the season ages ago) that the season finale was probably meant as a series finale. Which, while it breaks my heart, makes a lot more sense, given that I didn't know how they were going to write him off that bus (in the trope sense, not any kind of literal sense, of course). At any rate, I'm glad he at least got to slug Bell in his damn obnoxious face first. Thank you, writers, for going out with a bang.

Re: Psych. Just as good as always! Although that "joke gone wrong" of Juliet's in "Shawn Gets the Yips" was... almost so horrible it wasn't funny. Like, it took me a second to start laughing; I was doing this really weird "awww ha ha ha aw haha" thing because I couldn't decide whether it was terrible or hilarious. It was bizarre. But yes. Besides that, still loving the show, of course. And the fic. Read lots of fic recently, and that's been great, too.

Re: everything else: SHOWS ILU. More specifically: RP is freaking awesome, although they had me thinking the worst there at the end of the season finale. I think the show's coming back, right? It better! The Philanthropist failed to disappoint and I really hope it comes back as well. The Leverage sf threw me with the introduction of that newb in Sophie's place; I hope the writers know what they're doing, but I'll be back for more when it comes back. And WH13 and DB are, of course, perpetually awesome, yay for Carter getting to go under again, yay for Artie's "I once made it with under ten seconds left", and I'm so looking forward to the DB sf this week that I might stay up late after GLBTF (or come home early) just to get to watch it on the relatively-big screen. :) Oh, and Vampire Diaries (BuddyTV's moniker for it, "Dawson's Twilight Creek", is more than a little accurate) was hilariously hokey but watchable -- but I'm more glad for the former trait so I can enjoy Flash Forward guilt-free.

Relatedly, I've been all over the place fandom-wise since I got reacquainted with the internets. First, BuddyTV links I've been saving for you guys:

Oh, and speaking of Supernatural, the s5 premiere really was... not entirely satisfying. I'm still not quite sure why. In talking with Zera, I figured out that I'm fine with the way the writers are playing the issues, but the problem with that is we're getting it all entirely from Dean's POV. Which means that if the fans (*cough* Dean-girls) don't remember, say, the phone message, or Dean breaking the first seal, or any of various other things that serve to explain/justify Sam's actions, Sam comes off looking like all but the Devil himself and there the fans are shining Dean's halo. In short, I agree very much with this controversial BuddyTV article on the subject, as well as with the commenters on his side, particularly the one who said:
"I absolutely agree. But on a more expansive note, it really grinds my gears when people get so angry with Sam after what he did that they practically write him off as a traitor. Sam did the only thing that was left for him after Dean's death. Dean himself said, "Remember what Dad taught you. Remember what I taught you." And what did they teach him? Sacrifice for your family. That's all he knows. John died for Dean, Dean dies for Sam, and Sam... Sam tries to fight for Dean's life and is unsuccessful. He tried time and time again to save Dean, both before and after his death, but was refused."
And the one who said:
"Sam trusted him OWN judgment. He was wrong in this case, but it was never a case of Ruby over Dean. Trusting in your own judgment is everyone's right, so I don't even get that choosing one over the other idea - it's very high schoolish. Our Dean trusted the angels and just assumed they were on the good side, but they're anything but. What happened here is that Dean didn't want Sam to trust Ruby, and Sam disagreed. After all, he listened last year and did nothing when he could have tried to defeat Lilith with Ruby's help - and what happened? Dean WENT TO HELL. Sam is desperate not to stand by and do nothing ever again. Heck, Sam still thinks Dean called him a vampire and threatened his life, all those other hateful things, but he's not judging his brother. Be nice if he could get the same instead of being made to feel a monster and a freak. Even if you [think] Sam is both those things, that kind of name-calling does nothing but harm both of the brothers."
Really, both of them made mistakes, and all I want to say about it besides what I've already said is that I hope the writers eventually show they themselves remember that and don't just pin everything all on Sam, because he doesn't deserve that and I don't want to watch that. </soapbox>
Moving on...

I was also introduced to these Twilight-series recaps last weekend and they pretty much ate my weekend because they're awesome. The basic point is that she's reading the books so we don't have to, because they're that bad. Heh. And they sure sound it. I mean, Edward twirling part of her engine around in his hands while he gives her that little guilt-trip? Drop it in Criminal Minds and it'd almost be great writing. I don't know how anyone can think he's romantic/a good boyfriend/not a sociopath. *shudder* But so as not to offend, that's all I'll say about that, too. (Oh, except that I woke up the other day with a QL/Twilight bunny in my head. I'll just wait till she makes it through Breaking Dawn and then I'll take a crack at that, because boy would it be an improvement. And Sam roundhouse-kicking Edward wouldn't hurt, either. :))

Finally, in the last two three fandom-related things I think I have to say:
1. I think my new Dexter book is here. Tomorrow the post office opens and I can go get my package. Omgyay.
2. Despite the fact that I don't really like the song and am not completely sold on the ship, this vid (NSFW) is without a doubt the best one in the Dark Blue fandom. Seriously. Watch it. You don't have to have seen the show, and this will make you want to.
3. I am in love with both "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind (440ish pages/836, and counting), and the TV series, Legend of the Seeker, that was based off those books. We're talking "watched one episode, found the entire series on Hulu on legendoftheseeker.com (go to the 'full archive' tab), and watched the entire 22-episode first season within the space of two weeks" kinds of love. If you need more encouragement than that to watch it: Craig Horner, who plays the MC, looks like the lovechild of Stuart Townsend and Misha Collins. And there's swordfights. Lots of them. I'm serious, guys. (And you have plenty of time to catch up! Season 2 premieres Nov. 7. Go, go, watch and enjoy!)

Onto other things:
Homophobe Kern to face transgender challenger (Almost makes me wish I could vote in Oklahoma. Please, Oklahoma?! Faith in humanity, yes plz.)
Gay Code-Breaker Gets Belated Apology ("...Turing was "in effect tried for being gay," Brown stated. Upon conviction he was stripped of his security clearances and offered what Brown called a "miserable" choice of punishment: prison or chemical castration through injections of the female hormone, estrogen. He chose the latter, but the resulting isolation and depression led him to kill himself two years later, at the age of 41." This makes me sick. Just. God. *shudder*)

And on that note, two more things:

One, I still haven't backdated that entry I said I was going to. Eventually, I promise.

And two, I have a court date for my name change! Unfortunately, it's Wednesday, September 23rd, so I somehow have to get back to Texas on a Wednesday. Yeeeaaah. Looking at the bus and the train schedules, and we'll see how things progress when I talk to my parents again. But regardless, YAY.

Oh, and three? Here's the two best vids I've found for LotS, just to give you even more reason to watch and to make sure you don't miss them: one to Breaking Benjamin's "Blow Me Away" and a shippy one to Natalie Merchant's "My Skin".

Okay, that's all. Until next time. Which hopefully will be sooner than, say, NaNo. ;)

ETA: The documentary referred to in this (good) article about a trans British boy is now available on YouTube. Here, if anyone's interested.

ETA 2: Also, I got my first STP on Friday. Still... practicing..., but I'm pretty excited about it in a dumb, dorky way.

Oh man. The Twilight recaps are both terrifying and hilarious. I think I'm going to have to pass them along to my f-list, too.

A big update. I think you've shown me a number of the links. And yes, I also definitely think that the Twilight recaps are made of awesome... and um... creepy but only that which is derived from the book.

A friend of mine sporked Twilight, too. :-) He also did the Eragon trilogy and several other terrible books. I worry for his sanity sometimes, reading so many terrible books! ;-)

That article about Kern's opponent is awesome. ^_^ I hope her rival beats her. Total poetic justice ^_^
