Lots of things happened today. Had my first therapy appointment in a month (two weeks ago he'd had to take an emergency in my spot), and just as I was thinking they might be starting to get less useful, we had a really interesting/productive/useful session. Family stuff, mostly. So yay for that.

Then after that, I went and got advised again, because the advising the college had done had been decidedly unhelpful (the guy I'd got stuck with picked out the two classes I'd picked out, then couldn't help me with the rest of it). My advisor (besides telling me that two years of the same language in HS fulfilled the foriegn language requirement, which was a relief) picked out what were basically my four options and said "pick one of these two, and one of these two", and added that there wasn't much point to taking 15 hours next fall since there aren't any more technical classes I can take now, so later down the line I'd end up with a semester full of all technical classes, which would be the death of anybody (and I've been-there-done-that with AE anyway, and agree it's not a situation I want to put myself in).

Anyway, when I got back, I got on the Enroll website to finalize the rest of my schedule. Picking classes was pretty easy, given that of the two math classes, one's a required elective (Statistics), and the other's the same class my advisor's teaching in the spring (Numerical Methods); and of the other two, one was the class that she keeps talking bad about in favor of Technical Writing (Business Comm), and the other was "any non-Western class". It was difficult to figure out which classes would give me non-Western credit, but thankfully, because of Intersession, I already knew one, it was being offered in the fall, and there was one space left. So I select that and go on to find Stats.

Now, my classes tend to be offered in only one or two timeslots, and generally I have very little choice what I take when, so I don't get a whole lot of use out of Pick-a-Prof. But as it happens, with Stats, I had two options that worked with my other classes and no real reason to choose one over the other, so I got on Pick-a-Prof. First professor, L, had grade stats saying that in the class I was taking, almost 60% of students got an A. I'm like, "that sounds good..." but I looked up the other guy, MK, just in case. He didn't have grade stats, but I found the reviews (there were two):

"Strengths
One of the BEST professors I've ever had. Great sense of humor and very interesting class. You will learn statistics and he will also help broaden you[r] mind on other subjects.
Drawbacks
None."

"Strengths
Makes material extremely easy to understand. As long as you keep up with the material, homework and exams are a breeze. Is very friendly and jokes around all the time. Grades fairly easily. If you want an A, take a class with [MK].
Drawbacks
Horrible about getting homework and exams back. We took our first exam in mid-September, yet we didn't [get] it back until mid-November! Never got a homework assignment back. Often shows up to class 10-20 min late. I didn't feel like I learned much. If you want to learn a lot, don't take a class from him. Frankly, I think he should retire since his health is failing fast."

So I went and looked up the reviews for L, of which there were several. The curves on his tests ("to make up for utter stupidity of class going into exam") are described as "huge", "beneficial", "huge", and "amazingly good". Which explains the As. Nothing else about his class, it sounds like, is as good.

"Homework is worth an inordinate amount of your grade, and he gives you the most difficult problems, and even some he makes up himself. Moreover, don't expect his notes to be any help in deciphering the problems; most people didn't even come to the class for the notes because they were so useless. He cannot teach at all. Expect to learn nearly all of the material outside of class, and to do a lot of studying on your own. I got an A, but would not recommend that anyone take this class."

"a bit of a thick accent, and his lectures aren't that important. you will most likely need to learn how to solve the hw problems yourself... "

"Spends too much time on seemingly unimportant things. Class seems to have trouble understanding him through his German accent."

"Impossible to understand or read his writing. He's never prepared for class [and] tries to teach from his head. You have to teach yourself. Doesn't seem like he has a grip on teaching."

And one review that summed up all the others nicely, said simply "Drawbacks: Does not explain material well."

Needless to say, I snatched up one of the three remaining spots in MK's section faster than you could say "PMath flashbacks". L sounds like what would happen if you combined the worst aspects of my second PMath prof and my Physics prof and gave them a German accent, and that is not something I'd like to experience. >_<

But it doesn't end there, because while I was doing that, someone was snapping up my spot in World Music. So I went to pick out which section I should ask for permission to get in, and by the time I'd picked and nearly clicked the button to express interest, I went back to make sure I was on the right section, and lo and behold, my spot in the other section had opened back up. :) I was all over that like white on rice, let me tell you.

So I'm all enrolled and everything now. 12 hours next fall, here I come.

In other news, I'd been lazy about getting those forms for the research job returned to the right people, namely B. So today I got an email from B asking about them, and further down the thread it included a hilarious exchange between Professor P (the Logic prof I'm working for) and B. B thought she'd made a mistake and was somehow getting me confused with some girl with my same ridiculous last name. Prof P set her straight, though:
"His legal name is L******. He goes by Justin."
"Oh, okay. That is confusing cos I thought L****** was a girl and when you sent the last email with Justin, I panicked. LOL".

Lol, indeed. :) I'm going to clear it all up for her when I bring her the forms tomorrow.

Also, I printed off a bunch of Day of Silence speaking cards earlier, so I'm all set for that on Friday.

Speaking of, I talked to my speech prof yesterday, and he was happy to promise me a Monday slot for the informative speech. Yay.

Finally, Castle was pretty much made of pure awesome last night. The vest. Oh my God. I burst out in... okay, they might have been giggles... every time that thing was on screen. It was amazing. :D Win.
