Samverse doubledrabble set during "Swan Song". Major spoilers, of course. And I didn't get all I wanted to address addressed in this one -- and I had to cut it down from about 260 words as it is! -- so I'm expecting this to be the first of two. We'll see how it goes; this one was hard enough! Enjoy.

“Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” -- William Jennings Bryan

A Matter of Choice

At first, it’s like light coming through fog. Just a tiny hole in the wall barricading Sam in the back of his own mind, but it gives Sam the strength to fight.

He’s fought to inhabit his body before, after all; he’s suddenly perfectly sure he can do it again, now, when it matters more than ever.

He focuses on Dean’s rambling reassurances, on Dean – and emerges, gasping, from the fog. His body solid around him again, his.

“I’ve got him,” he says, and it’s true. He can feel Lucifer angrily pounding away, and it takes half his concentration to not lose the ground he’s gained, but he has the upper hand now.

He fishes the rings from his pocket, the Latin spilling out easily between gasps.

At the sight of the hole, he’s scared despite himself. Allows himself to be distracted by Michael calling his name, trying to convince him to stop.

“It’s my destiny!” Michael says over the wind.

Screw destiny, Sam thinks, not for the first time.

And he closes his eyes and prepares to jump.

(When Michael runs at him, taking him down with him is simply instinct. And maybe destiny of a sort, after all.)

*sits back and just* wow. Fabulous work and in such a short space. Succinct and to the point. I like it. :-) I really like the insight into Sam here. Loverly work.

I can understand that. How're things going otherwise?

*nods* I might check it out...not doing much reading right now...but maybe over the weekend.

Oh that's too bad (fic-wise). I've been making good progress although kicking myself today because I left the section I was working on AT work. And I know it's not in my room...which means it's laying around somewhere and it'll probably get tossed...and *growls* I liked what I had.

Ooo what are you taking for summer classes? I've got about 5 more weeks before I'm done for the school year.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm gonna lose ground this weekend...I got an IM yesterday asking if I wanted company this weekend. And I haven't seen her in a couple of months (I think Easter was the last time) so of course I said "yes!" Although she doesn't care if I write while she's here..I can't always focus.

All righty gonna answer a couple more emails and then see if I can manage some writing tonight.

Niiice that you get paid for it. I did that last year (took a class through work) but then the funds fell through and we never got paid. But *shrugs* at least I didn't pay to attend it. I wish it had been more useful though.

I did find my writing. I was so happy. I apparently left it tucked behind one of the computers in the library so when I went back in to look for it, it was still there. So happy since I really liked what I had written (all like 4 paragraphs) and wasn't sure I could re-create it.

Good luck over the weekend. I have a feeling my production is gonna suck because I have to clean my room tomorrow morning. I have company coming after lunch. I hit my goal--actually went over it--for the month tonight though. So I'm happy.

And I should head for bed...just looked at the clock and realized it's after 1am...but I took a two hour nap when I got home from work so I just got tired recently.

Yeah I was ecstatic when I got into work and found it. Guess I can finally be happy that our custodians don't clean up very well.

Hey writing is writing as my mentor says. I was laughing yesterday...she was complaining about not writing and I said well what did you do today? And she started listing everything (which started with taking care of my goddaughter) and I was like "well, geez no wonder you didn't write. Look at what all you DID do!"

So don't count what you didn't do, count what you did do and celebrate that. :-)
